Rightware’s Kanzi powers the digital displays of the new Maserati Grecale compact luxury SUV
HELSINKI–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Rightware today announced that global icon Maserati has used its Kanzi user interface (UI) toolchain to create the primary human-machine interface (HMI) for its 2023 Grecale compact luxury SUV. Kanzi software powers the graphics for the digital instrument cluster and Heads-Up Display (HUD).
Kanzi enabled a highly productive process for creative design and software engineering, accelerating development of the Grecale HMI while bringing significant cost savings to the complex project, resulting in a major leap forward for the driving experience .
“To have the premium, performance-driven brand Maserati choose Kanzi to develop its first digital instrument cluster is an honor,” said Freddie Geier, CEO of Rightware. “Brand identity is at the heart of the business, and Kanzi enabled his team to design and implement a signature user interface true to the Maserati lineage.”
Not only is the Grecale the brand’s first vehicle with a fully digital instrument cluster, it’s also the company’s first production vehicle with in-house designed on-screen graphics. The Maserati Innovation Lab in Modena implemented a design carried out by the Style Center in Turin.
In the past, Maserati provided high-level user interface concepts to its HMI supplier, who in turn handled the design and implementation. Using Kanzi, a small team of Maserati designers and engineers were able to take the instrument cluster and HUD from initial design concepts to mass production in just under two years.
The result is a content-rich digital cockpit that retains the classic Maserati look. Kanzi enabled the team to deliver a unique user interface with rich 3D graphics in the instrument cluster without losing the look of the brand’s traditional mechanical gauges.
With Kanzi, Maserati had full control of the user experience and graphic visualization, from prototype to production. Rapid prototyping in Kanzi Studio gave the team the flexibility to iterate the design often throughout the process. With traditional tools and workflows, such intensive iteration tends to lead to long delays.
User interface design has traditionally taken at least three years. Going from inception of design to production in less than two years is a major achievement. Beyond shortening the development cycle, Kanzi has enabled Maserati to take advantage of cutting-edge graphics to create a contemporary and unique user experience.
Maserati plans to offer the Grecale with both traditional and hybrid powertrains, and possibly an all-electric version. Each variant will require unique information to display on digital screens while maintaining the look and feel of the model family. Leveraging Kanzi’s advanced capabilities, Maserati can easily manage user interface variations within a single project, maximizing reuse for a consistent brand identity.
